Quality Function Deployment

Use Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to track how key, new, unique, and difficult customer requirements are being addressed and verified. QFD typically starts with a matrix of customer requirements (voice of customer, VOC) versus functional requirements (critical to quality, CTQ). This matrix is known as the 1st House of Quality.
Different approaches are described in literature and case studies on how to form a QFD cascade of several Houses of Quality. Templates for two commonly used approaches are available for selection:
3 Houses of Quality:
Cascade of three QFD matrices implementing the mapping of design domains as described by Num Pyo Suh in “Axiomatic Design”.
- QFD 1 - House of Quality: House of Quality of CTQs over VOC. Mapping of the customer domain to the functional domain.
- Component Design Matrix: Matrix of design parameters (characteristics) over CTQ's. Mapping of the functional domain to the physical domain.
- Characteristics Matrix: Matrix of process steps and process parameters over design parameters (characteristics). Mapping of the physical domain to the process domain.
4 Houses of Quality:
Cascade of four QFD matrices implementing the mapping described in a case study by Makabe frequently reproduced in literature on Quality Function Deployment.
- QFD 1 - House of Quality: First “House of Quality” of CTQs over VOC.
- QFD 2 – CTQs to Functions: Second “House of Quality” of functions over CTQs.
- QFD 3 – Functions to Characteristics: Third “House of Quality” of characteristics over functions.
- QFD 4 – Characteristics to Process: Fourth “House of Quality” of process steps over characteristics.
