Concept Development

Apply conceptual design methodology: identify functions, identify and combine solutions in using a Morphological Box. Then define requirements and score solutions against them in a Pugh matrix.

This Template Provides the Following Worksheets:

  1. 1
System Analysis: perform system analysis as outlined in the AIAG / VDA FMEA Handbook. First create a system structure, then identify functions for each system element. Link functions to create a function tree.
  2. 2
Morphological Box: list solutions (concept fragments) for each function requiring a new implementation. Then define concepts from feasible combinations of concept fragments.
  3. 3
TRIZ Contradiction Analysis: identify functions or requirements in conflict with each other, categorize them according to TRIZ schematic to see the TRIZ inventive principles applicable.
  4. 4
CTQs: define criteria to be used on the Pugh matrix for scoring.
  5. 5
CTQ AHP Prioritization: rank criteria for the Pugh matrix.
  6. 6
Pugh Matrix (CTQs): score solutions (concepts from the Morphological Box) against criteria

What to Add or Combine:

  • FAST: Function Analysis system Technique. Use this approach as an alternative to system analysis in situations where you prefer not to start from an existing system structure.
  • Requirements Analysis: Collect and cluster voice of customer (VOC) requirements, prioritize using Analytical Hierarchy Process pairwise comparison, define CTQs and summarize in a House of Quality. Use ranked CTQs from the House of Quality or CTQ-Tree as an input to conceptual design.
