About SIPOC
A SIPOC helps to identify scope, team members and stakeholders to be included on the project charter whenever the focus area of optimization or root cause analysis can be described in terms of process steps.
Identify the scope of the process to be analyzed.
The output of the SIPOC is a clear project scope and list of stakeholders / potential team members.
How to insert the SIPOC component
The SIPOC template can be used to start new projects or to extend existing projects. Please read chapter "The Templates" to learn more about how to start new projects.
In order to extend your project:
- Activate the Insert Ribbon
- Click the Add Tool button on the Insert ribbon
- Click the SIPOC icon in the template catalog
The SIPOC component is located in this cycle/phase combinations:
- SIX SIGMA DMAIC: DEFINE
- LEAN SIX SIGMA DMAIC: DEFINE
Activate the right cycle by clicking its item at the blue left section of the template catalog. Then scroll the window to the right phase in order to find the module SIPOC.

The SIPOC component consists of one single worksheet, prepared to enter suppliers, inputs, processes, outputs, and customers.
SIPOC Pros and Cons
Pros
- Little effort compared to full process modeling
- Improves understanding of the process and reduces possible misunderstandings within the team by building a common vocabulary
- defines clear boundaries for the process and enables efficient and focused analysis
- Confinement to the process generates added value in terms of the shared knowledge of the team without the usual distractions
Cons
- A SIPOC serves as an introduction to a topic and is not suitable for detailed anlyses
- A SIPOC focusses on a generic overview and can not substitute a detailed root cause analysis. This can be done by other methods, e.g. Ishikawa Diagrams, Process Flow Charts, etc.

Then enter additional information about each process in the two columns at the left and the two columns at the right.
